Mercer Health hosts fifth annual Charity Ball
The 2019 Mercer Health Charity Ball, held on November 16 at Romer’s Catering in St. Henry, began with a tented cocktail social featuring gourmet appetizers, smoked old fashioneds – the event’s signature cocktail – and live acoustic entertainment by Roger DeMange. The social, complete with an outdoor fireplace, began setting the stage for the guests’ journey into the enchanted forest that would serve as the theme for the event.
As guests entered the hall, they stepped across a bridge to take in the full scenery, which included life-size trees adorned with twinkling lights, stunning floral arrangements and woodland creatures. The evening began with a convocation provided by Cindy Liette, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, and a CEO address provided by Lisa Klenke, Chief Executive Officer.
Romer’s began serving the first course of dinner – a blueberry arugula salad with honey lemon dressing. Entrees quickly followed – guests had a choice between seared airline chicken with vegetable rouge and smoked beef tenderloin or asparagus risotto stuffed peppers and three cheese ravioli with mushroom pesto. Both entrees were accompanied by a roasted root vegetable medley and sweet corn succotash.
As dinner concluded, guests began to mingle, select black forest cupcakes, crème brulee or bourbon balls from a dessert bar provided by Mrs. B’s Catering and help themselves to gourmet coffee, compliments of Hazelnut Coffee Company. Soon, guests were encouraged to make their way back to their seats as the after-dinner entertainment commenced.
The show began with a tap number by dancers from Boyd Dance Studios, featuring Ryan Fullenkamp on the drum, followed by a performance by singer Jimmi Kilduff. The show-stopping finale featured Elena Sanders, a contortionist who ended her act by shooting a bow and arrow with her toes. All acts were coordinated by Jellison Entertainment.
Live music, provided by Brena, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, had guests quickly making their way to the dance floor, where many remained for the duration of the night! As only a room full of Ohioans could do, the crowd convinced “West Michigan’s premiere party band” to play “Hang On Sloopy.”
During one of the band’s final breaks, Deb Hemmelgarn, MED Foundation Director, and Dr. Edward Hosbach, the event’s emcee, drew the final 25 names in the 1,000 ticket reverse raffle for a 2019 Corvette Stingray Coupe. The winner was Linus Post, who purchased ticket number 674. Linus chose to keep the car and claimed his prize the following week at Bud’s Chevrolet Buick Corvette in St. Marys.
This year marks the fifth anniversary for the Charity Ball since its reintroduction in 2015. Over the last five years, the event has raised nearly $500,000 in support of the Sanderell Family West Wing at Mercer County Community Hospital.
The Mercer Health Charity Ball would not be possible without the continued support of our many generous sponsors and the dedication of the talented committee who plans the event each year.
